Prince Yeoning(延礽君, 1694-1776) was the younger brother of King Gyeongjong(景宗). He became King Yeongjo(英祖). The purpose of this study was to examine the coming of age ceremony procedures and costumes of Prince Yeoning. During the Joseon Dynasty, young men were required to have Confucian-style coming of age ceremonies called Gwanrae(冠禮) before being accepted as adults. The ceremony involved of a headdress called Gwanmo(冠帽), a symbol of adulthood, being placed on the head of the young man, and then the young man changing into adult clothes. Details of Prince Yeoning’s Gwanrae were recorded in two documents: Wangjagaryedeungrok(王子嘉禮謄錄), and 『Yeoninggungwanraesideungrokchogun(延礽君冠禮時謄錄草件)』. The ceremony was held on December 15th, 1703. The ceremony was divided into 4 parts, and the order of the ceremony was as follows: Chochul(初出), Choga(初加), Jaega(再加), and Samga(三加), respectively. Before the ceremony started, Yeoning’s hair was put into double topknot called Ssangdonggye(雙童䯻), and was dressed in indigo blue Jikryung(直領). This was the Chochul stage. The first costume he changed into was the costume for Choga, which consisted of a black ceremonial robe called Heukdanryeong(黑團領), Samo(紗帽). The Heukdalryung with a rank badge[胸背] was custom-made in the palace, as this robe had a rank badge with keumrin[金麟胸背] on the chest and the back. The second costume Yeoning changed into was the costume for Jaega, which consisted of a scarlet robe called Gongbok(公服), Bokdu(幞頭). The third set of costume was the costume for Samga. The robe worn for this stage was called Jobok(朝服). These records provide information regarding the procedure and the costumes of the Gwanrae. The documents also cataloged the materials used for the clothing, which can be used to make inferences about the types and forms of costumes worn by 18th century princes. This study highlights the need for additional studies of the costume culture of princes in the Middle and Late Joseon dynasty.
