Life-cycle rituals are ceremonies that people have to go through over their whole life. These rituals are separated by some stages, such as a birth-ritual, the first birthday ritual, a coming-of-age ceremony, a wedding, the 60th birthday, an ancestral ritual. In these rituals, the person concerned and attendants are wearing a costume related to each rituals and the costume is called ‘Hanbok’, which present class of the ritual. And these ceremonies of each stage of life guide the person concerned to a better life with self-completion through manners.
The costume of life-cycle rituals develop the Korean traditional culture as a modern life culture in relation to succession of the Korean heritage and also the campaign of rightful wearing Hanbok, as a formal traditional dress, will be well established in modern society.
Consequently, the purpose of this study is not only to confirm the function of Hanbok in these traditional ritual, but also to express meaning of these ritual and to consider its meaning and practice of manners. Also this study focused on these ceremonial costume modernly reinterpreted from original forms of Korean tradition.
As a result, the Hanbok, as a good cultural trend, will be transferred to the next generation through rightful wearing ritual Hanbok and rightful information of its meaning in these ceremonies.
