The research aims an adjustable Hanbok (Korean traditional clothes) design for infants. Currently infants quickly outgrow Hanbok and are only able to wear it for a brief period of time. Unlikely adults who tend to only wear Hanbok for ceremonial events such as holidays, weddings or first-birthday parties, Hanbok is commonly viewed as a cultural inheritance for children and an important element of their educational development. Some considered Hanboks for infants to be uneconomical because they are quickly outgrown. They turn to alternatives such as renting Hanbok, replacing Hanbok with Western clothing or purchasing mass-produced ready-made Hanboks for single use. The focus on economic profit in the Hanbok market has led to a dissonance between the traditional and the modern Hanbok and a distorted image of the Hanbok. It is evident that a new direction for Hanbok for infants needs to be considered. This study intends an approach to Hanbok design that allows for adjustment according to a child’s body size and age. Infants have the most opportunities to wear Hanbok between 3 and 6 years of age, a period in which growth rates are fastest. This fact is supported by data from the Korean Agency for Technology and Standards in the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Energy. The new design reflects value because the adjustable size of each garment caters for infant growth. Through this study, two sets of boys’ clothing and two sets of girls’ clothing have been produced. The suggested method involves a design for the infant Hanbok that allows for adjustment to the size of each garment. This paper describes a significant opportunity in the field of Korean Traditional Costume through the review and application of methods enabling the adjustment of traditional infants’ clothing to match their physical development. It is expected that this study will form a basis for an expanding area of research and an increasing number of studies of Hanbok for infants.
