The purpose of this study is to suggest a path to the development of a new ritual gown for Cheondogyo members, by analyzing the costume worn by their leaders through many generations as well as the present style of their costume. This study was carried out by analyzing the background of Cheondogyo’s ideology and the costumes of successive heads, as well as its current ritual gown. Through the research, it was determined Cheondogyo’s ritual gown wasn’t a unique costume for a specific religion but a common costume for ritual at that time. The coat dyed black with buttons and the old western-styled suit were not ritual gowns, and were only used for practical purposes during Korea’s modernization. Through a compositional and symbolic analysis, this study also showed that the ritual gown currently used by Cheondogyo organization is lacking in terms of a clothing pattern that fully considers human body engineering, the significance of the religious symbols, and a sense of contemporaneity and quality, making it inadequate as a ritual gown. In conclusion, a new ritual gown is needed, in which the colors, design and composition have been modernized. For this reason, a new ritual gown for Cheondogyo should be developed with a contemporary beauty that is in keeping with its ritual characteristics and roles, that reflects Korea’s culture of traditional clothes and that has symbols and a unity related to Cheondogyo’s images, with pride in Cheondogyo.
