Amnesty International says that at least one woman in every three have been beaten, coerced into sex or otherwise abused in her lifetime. The advent of social media gives credence to this fact, as more women come forward to tell their stories of abuse and sexual violence via their Twitter handles, Facebook pages, Instagram posts and Snapchat. However, this hitherto positive development also shines the light on the global culture of discrimination against women, and inequality among the sexes. A typical online response to a woman who calls out her partner, boyfriend and husband for sexually assaulting her is often laced with mockery, cyberbullying and body-shaming. In one of such instances, the lady who cried out was asked what she was doing in the man’s house in the first place. Another lady was told and I quote “take it as a compliment that he found you irresistible and had to have a taste”. A story broken on the internet about a fourteen-year-old girl who was raped by her teacher and an anonymous commenter said “How can a fourteen-year-old girl have such huge breasts? The poor teacher must have tempted by such succulent boobs! I can’t blame him”. Social media has created an environment for networking and learning; but its culture on anonymity has given rise to insidious cyberbullying and body-shaming. This paper attempts to examine the role that online culture and social media plays in our fight against sexual violence against women. Using Nigerian case studies; the writer suggests that violence and shame can be curbed through a collective effort.
