This paper aims to propose a syntactic approach to prosodic focus in English. By exploring various types of focus in English, this paper shows that the pitch accent assignment is closely related to the informational structure in the semantic component. That is, the pitch accent assignment is not a pure phonological peration. Rather, the pitch accent assignment is determined in the narrow syntax. To explain the correlation between the phonological and semantic components in detail, this paper attempts to generalize the prosodic accent pattern in English. Based on the generalization put forth in this paper, various types of focus phenomena, such as presentational, corrective, counterprepositional, definitional focus, etc., and the different pitch accent assignment patterns depending on the different syntactic structures, such as embedded nonfinite clauses, resultatives, etc., are explored.
