The revival in the 19th century describes the phenomenon in which people became more conscious of guilt and sympathy. This usually occurred to people through religious leaders and was accompanied by loss of body control and emotion.
However, the common form of revival in England during the Industrial Revolution was influenced by Evangelicalism. This influenced form, called the silent revival, illustrated the belief individuals had around the importance of moral aspects, such as self-help and respectability, and demonstrates the concerns over the exaggerated form of revival. The emphasis of individuals’ moral aspects was what made Evangelicalism different to Calvinism and explains why in England during this time, changes in an individual was seen to be more important than structural changes in the society.
Conclusively, it can be said that the emphasis on individuals’ responsibilities, continual devotion, and strict moral standard, as opposed to the exaggerated form of revival, formed the foundation of Victorian values.
