This study examines Daegu’s first western missionary William M. Baird (1862-1931), also known as Bae Wi-ryang, with focus on his social influence on the Korean communities. Through Baird, Daegu Station of the Presbyterian Church (USA) conducted missionary work in earnest, thus triggering modern social change in the region of Daegu and Gyeongsangbuk-do. This is because the then missionary work did not stop only at preaching Christianity but performed educational mission and medical mission, thus even spreading modern thinking and civilizations.
Baird, the first western in Daegu, left several episodes. Not lifting himself above the strong curiosity of Daegu locals over a foreigner, Baird could not stay for a long time in Daegu, but he led to opening the era of local missionary hub apart from Seoul-centered missionary work, and to creating the foundation for the missionary work of the Daegu and Gyeongsangbuk-do region.
Afterwards, Baird, while staying in Pyongyang, established and ran Christian Middle and High Schools, and established Korea’s first 4-year university, thus leading the way in promoting Joseon’s modern private education. The educational model, established by him, was applied to the nationwide missionary division, leading to Daegu establishing the first private school and middle school. It was through March 1 Independence Movement that the establishment of Christian schools was found to have a great influence on the view of value of the future generations. March 1 Daegu Movement was able to be conducted with the leading engagement of nearby churches, Christian school students and teachers. Christian education awakened Joseon people to mental enlightenment.
The lesson from Baird was Christianity"s social role. In late Joseon era with political and social turmoil, the missionary work engaged in public education and medical services where the government could not extend its helping hand properly, spreading such services fast to the public. In addition, the missionary policy, which was focused on Korean alphabet friendly policy, women education policy and the public rather than the elite, had hugh ripple effects on the public. The missionary"s such decision was possible because he accurately identified the times and responded to them.
Christianity"s social mission was essential. Faith, if shut up inside individual humans, will not go universal. Christian love should not stop at self-centered love. It should extend to the love of neighbors, love of peoples, and love of nations. It is not one"s own nation-centered selfish love, but universal love, humanitarian love, and altruistic love. Our love of our people and our love of our nation should not be based on collective selfish love, but should extend to humanitarian altruistic love. March 1 Movement was where the love extended.
What are Christianity’s mission and roles that Korean society today call for? Efforts to look for such mission and roles and put them to practice are Christians’ mission. The lesson from Joseon missionaries was how Christians responded to those times. As social situations change, what society requires will be different. Christians’ mission today is that we should think deeply of our-era mission and role.
