This present article focuses specifically on the formation of the Schmalkaldic League. This League was both a political and religious defensive alliance during the Reformation which was formed by the Protestant territories of the Holy Roman Empire to defend themselves collectively against any attempt to give the Protestant territories a deadline by which to return to Catholic practices at the Diet of Augsburg in 1530. In the Holy Roman Empire, which covered much of central Europe, the newly Lutheran princes clashed with their Emperor: he was the secular head of the Catholic church and they were part of a heresy. In 1531, Charles V issued an ultimatum to the Protestant states. Because they were given the condition of returning back to their traditional Catholic rituals or face the wrath of the Emperor, many Protestant German States feared the military of the Holy Roman Emperor.
On February 27, 1531, the Schmalkaldic League was by Philip I, Landgrave of Hesse, and John , Elector of Saxony, the two most powerful Protestant rulers at the time formed. membership was condi tional on agreement to the Lutheran Augsburg. Named after the small town of Schmalkalden in Thuringia, it was a defense alliance of German princely and city states. The Schmalkaldic League, an alliance of Lutheran princes and cities that pledged to protect each other from any religiously motivated attack lasted for sixteen years, so that this League solidified the dominance of Lutheranism in Germany to the exclusion of Zwinglianism after the Marburg Colloquy in 1529 and Zwingli’s death on the battlefield of Kappel in 1531. At this Colloquy, the Zwinglians and Lutherans presented separate statements which showed the differences in opinion with regard to the doctrine of the sacrament. It should be noted that the Marburg Colloquy was the only chance to unite the Protestant states in political alliance, because religious harmony was an important consideration for the political-military resistance.
