2019 is a historic year celebrating the 100th anniversary of the 1919 March First Independence Movement. Many papers have recently been presented and published highlighting the 1919 March First Independence Movement. Various researches were actively conducted, including the participation of the 1919 March First Independence Movement in each denomination and each region, and the linkage between the 1919 March First Independence Movement and the Provisional Government of the Republic of Korea. However, few articles have studied the spiritual and ideological origins of the 1919 March First Independence Movement. The purpose of this paper is to historically examine the Korean national independence movement, which was the background of the 1919 March First Independence Movement, in relation to the spirit of the Protestant Reformation.
Three principles of the Reformation; the Bible is the only standard of faith and practice, justification by faith, and the universal priesthood have a profound effect on the United Kingdom, the Scotland, and the New World. The predestinarian thought of the Reformers gave the Puritans a consciousness of the chosen people and became the ideological background for developing religious and civil liberties and political democracy in the New World. Protestant Puritans were the leaders of the American independence movement, and Presbyterians, Congregations, and Baptists participated directly in the American Independence War. The Presbyterian Church and the Congregational Church were also at the forefront of the school-founding movement in the United States, and in their schools, religious and civil liberties and democratic thought based on the Protestant spirit blossomed.
Born, raised, and educated in this background, they came to Korea as Protestant pioneer missionaries. Through the schools, churches, teachings, and lives of Protestant missionaries, the Protestant spirit was passed on to Koreans to provide the ideological soil for Korean national and independence movements. Thus, the Protestant spirit made a great contribution to the rise of the Korean national and independence movements. That is also the case with 16 Protestant leaders among 33 national representative signers of the Declaration of Independence(1919) and 24 Protestant leaders from 48 national representatives.
