From August 29, 1910, Japan enforced the so-called ‘unauthorized rule’. Koreans were deprived of sovereignty and had to be tyrannized and robbed in all areas of society, economy, and culture. Freedom of religion and basic human rights were also deprived. In the era of despair, the Korean Presbyterian Church presented the hope with the Gospel and went over the hill of affliction together. The Korean Presbyterian Church convinced that the independence of fatherland was the will of God and stood at the forefront of the people and led them, shouting the independence of Korea. The declarations and shouts that began at 2 p.m. on March 1, 1919 at Taehwagwan and at Pagoda Park in Seoul spread throughout the whole country. in the historic sites the Declaration of Independence in the name of 33 ethnic representatives was read. Leaders proclaimed the will of independence and national self-respect to the Japanese and to the whole world. Up until the huge national-historic independence movement, seven persons of the Korean Presbyterian Church including elder Lee Seung-hoon played a pivotal role in the planning and preparation of the independence movement, the collaboration with other religions, national communication networks and organizing, and the spread of demonstrations. The representatives were Pastor Gil Sun-Joo, Pastor Yang Jeon-Baek, Pastor Kim Byung-Jo, Pastor Yoo Yeo-Dae, Elder Lee Myung-ryong who devoted their lives for their country. They consisted of four pastors, two elders and one deacon. This tells us how much the Korean Presbyterian Church loves its country, exercised and practiced it’s the mission of the time and ethnic responsibility. In this regard, seven Korean Presbyterians should be highly appreciated.
