This paper aims at presenting some characteristics of Tourism English with special emphasis on the Tourism Industry. Tourism English is a relatively new subject both in the area of English education and to the tourist industry, although English in the tourist business has taken on an important role in various forms of the profession. Tourism English, in the literal sense, interfaces with three different fields, English, Tourism, and Education: As far as English is concerned, Tourism English can be summarized as service-based, field-oriented, knowledge-based English; as far as Tourism is concerned, it involves some basic knowledge of the Science of Tourism or Tourist Industry; as far as Education is concerned, it is regarded as English for Special Purposes. Tourism English also interfaces with three broader areas of study: as a subset of tourist industry, it interfaces with society as a whole; as a communication tool, it interfaces with the English language; as an academic profession, it needs comprehensive knowledge of the native as well as the target culture and history. Tourism English is situated right in the middle of the intersection of these three areas. This leads to conclude that Tourism English is a highly interdisciplinary area and it should be treated as a separate area, for example Tourism English(TE) with respect to English education as well as to tourism related fields, because of its unique characteristics.
