Reducing energy consumption is important to alleviate environmental pollution and social conflicts that arise from the production and use of energy. This study analyzes key variables related to household electricity consumption in cities(Si), counties(Gun), and districts(Gu) in Korea. In particular, since energy consumption varies depending on the regional characteristics, regional types are divided into Seoul metropolitan area(type 1), local cities(type 2), and rural areas(type 3). Energy consumption and its characteristics were compared according to regional types. This study shows that the proportion of apartment households and living area per household have the effect to increase residential electricity consumption across all regional types. In the Seoul metropolitan area, high level of local taxes paid increase the electricity consumption per household, however, as the park areas per capita and the proportion of old houses increase, electricity consumption per household decreases. In local cities, non-economic activity population ratio and household density have the effect increasing electricity consumption per household. In rural area household characteristics and urban characteristics are not significant. This shows that energy consumption factors differ depending on the types of region. Accordingly, the following various policy measures can be considered for each regional type. Residents-led energy management in apartment complexes and energy diagnosis activities in large houses need to be further encouraged in all regional types. Enlarging the green space and open space in the overcrowded cities and promoting the installation of solar panels on verandah and rooftop space in local cities can be considered. In addition, more quantitative and empirical researches on household energy needs to be carried out in order to manage energy demand more closely.
