Since the birth of the world’s first Confucius Institute in South Korea in 2004, 23 Confucius institutes have started operating in South Korea in the past 14 years. Except the Seoul Confucius Institute, the first Confucius Institute in South Korea, all others are joint efforts between Chinese and Korean universities. 44 universities in China and South Korea have been engaging in the cooperative operation of Confucius Institutes, and their various management methods, operation modes and administrative procedures make every Confucius Institute have unique characteristics. The academic curriculum, planned activities and cooperative partners and so on are all different. In the past decade, every Confucius Institute showed its own advantages and disadvantages. The author of this article conducted an innovative study of Confucius Institutes in South Korea by visiting and studying the 17 Confucius Institutes in the country (except Jeju Island) that have been operated for more than three years by December 2017, and analyzing the operation modes, curriculums, activities and the cooperation between Chinese and Korean headmasters of each Confucius Institute. Also, based on the comprehensive analysis of the strength and weakness of each type of Confucius Institute, this article summarized and analyzed the shared characteristics of South Korean Confucius Institutes.
