Purpose: Although there have been early intervention programs for the children with hearing impairment in Korea for quite long time, we can still find various individual differences in their language competency. Because working memory is one of the factors closely related to language abilities, we were to investigate how this relationship is represented in the relationship between working memory and language abilities. Methods: This study was carried out on a total of 45 children aged from 8 to 10 years old divided into three groups; each group consisted of 15 children with cochlear implants(CI), hearing aids(HA), or typically developing children and their language age was 9 years old. We compared the working memory ability for forward digit span and nonsense sentence repetition related to phonological functions and backward digit span and reading span related to central executive function. Results: The results of this study were as follows: First, children with hearing impairment showed significantly lower working memory task performance than typically developing children. This suggests that even though the children with hearing impairment and with typical development show similar language abilities, deficits in working memory ability may still remain. Second, children with cochlear implants showed similar performance than those with hearing aids despite of the severer degree of hearing loss. Third, the children with cochlear implants excelled only in nonsense sentence repetition over the children with hearing aids. Conclusions: Even when the language age was controled, the children with hearing impairment were more likely to have working memory deficit compared to the typically developing peers. We would question if 1-2 year stage is early enough for the children with hearing impairment to develop the working memory abilities and if there are other factors affecting the working memory abilities of the children with hearing impairment.
