Osteoprotegerin (OPG) plays a core role in bone reformation by antagonizing the effect of receptor activator of nuclear factor κ-B ligand (RANKL), and mediates vascular calcification in cardiovascular disease patients. Thus, we aimed to examine the correlations between combined exercise, serum OPG levels and adipokine in obese middle-aged women. 24 obese women (body mass index ≥25 kg/m²) participated in this study and divided into exercise and control (n=12, respectively). Complex training program of aerobic (intensity at 55~75% HRmax, 30 minutes a day) and resistance (intensity at 10~12 RM, 20 minutes a day) for 5 times per week for 8 weeks. Physical measurement, biochemical assay were measured. Serum OPG and leptin, and adiponectin were assessed. After complex training, weight, percent body fat, serum OPG levels, and leptin were significantly decreased, and adiponectin was significantly increased in exercise group. Serum OPG was a significant negative correlation with weight (r=.522, p=.009) and BMI (r=.564, p=.004) in pre, and significant positive correlation with △percent body fat (r=.647, p=.023) in post. In terms of the correlation between weight (β=.522, p=.009) and BMI (β= .564, p=.004) were negative correlation with OPG with 27.3 and 31.8 percent of influence in respectively. △percent body fat (β=.647, p=.023) also showed positive correlation with OPG with 41.9 percent of influence. In conclusion, our study showed that serum OPG levels are correlated with cardiovascular risk factors, such as weight, BMI and percent body fat in obese middle-aged women and adipoline, suggesting that serum OPG has potential as a cardiovascular disease indicator and predictor.
