Pseudogapping in English is argued to be a structure where the remnant is moved out of the VP before the deletion under identity in English VP Ellipsis structure. This paper, however, through utilizing BNC, is intended to refute the argument that the difference between VP Ellipsis and Pseudogapping structure is due to the movement. After extracting VP Ellipsis and Pseudogapping structures from BNC, this paper aims to reach the following two goals. Firstly, it analyzes the frequency and the characteristics in the usage of two structures according to its registers. Secondly, it shows counter-examples of the analyses that are based on theoretical data drawn from linguists’ introspection and consequently suggests the necessity of corpus data. The results of the study present that 1) two structures are clearly different from each other in terms of the frequency and the usage; 2) the difference between two structures is not due to the movement.
