In the 1920, the children’s magazine 『Eolinee (Children)』 introduced a lot of knowledge and emotional information regarding Choseon as a national space. The information did not just deliver facts but also a carefully choreographed plan to raise a sense of national identity and a feeling of sympathy. Sharing the knowledge and emotional senses related to the space of ‘Choseon’ meant so much more than just understanding the living conditions of its ‘people’. The characteristic of space was interpreted as an equivalent to the national character of the Korean people themselves. Based on this interpretation, attempts followed where Choseon was depicted as a ‘paradise’ or given an aggressive character of a fearless and brave tiger.
Choseon became so much more than just a living space: It become a space that could endow a strong sense of belonging and identity as a motherland and homeland. As a modern-era magazine, 『Eolinee (Children)』 was viewed as having a direct linkage with its readers through dynamic layouts of the pages and its articles and through the interactive relations. In the process of connecting oneself with Joseon as a given space, numerous devices were utilized, expanding the scope of nationalistic identity and consensus. By delivering the use of diverse dialects and unique features of different regions on the same page, diversity among the Korean people were promoted and celebrated as a national identity. These attempts were well-received by the readers and presented new opportunities for Nationalism. But there was a downside as well: By depicting those outside the country as orphans, an image was created where the homeland became a closed and exclusive space. This exposes the problem that Korea’s modern Nationalism continues to struggle with in the days ahead.
