The purpose of this study is to investigate Korean case alternation constructions in terms of differential case markings. The differential case markings as an alternative to default cases depend on the notions such as definiteness and animacy, which are argued to account for the case alternation constructions in Korean. The constructions discussed in this paper include the alternations from genitive, or dative marked NPs to accusative, or nominative marked NPs. The first finding is that the accusative marked NPs as differential object case(DOC) tend to have the differential case property of definiteness and animacy and show the object property in terms of semantic affectedness. The second claim is that the nominative marked NPs as differential subject case(DSC) tend to have the differential case property of definiteness and animacy and show the subject property in terms of the agreement with honorific marker ‘-si’ within the sentential verb. The nominative marked NPs in place of genitive or dative marked ones are also motivated by the thematization or focus function for the NPs in the sentences.
