Pigment coating has been widely applied to improve printability by controlling surface properties and pore structure of paper and paperboard. However, since a low-grade raw material having a deep color is used in manufacturing the paperboard, there is a problem that the color of the filler layer and the underlayer stock is transmitted to the surface of the coated paperboard. In order to solve this problem, the amount of the coating has been increased mainly or the mixing of the coating pigment has been solved. In this study, it was attempted to improve the opacity of the coated paperboard by adding a small amount of dyes during the preparation of the coating color, taking into consideration that the opacity can be improved by absorbing the light when the dye is added to the paper furnish during papermaking. The effects of dyes addition on the brightness, whiteness and printability of the coated paperboard as well as the viscosity and water retention value of the coating color were also investigated. Although a trace amount of dyes were used, it was confirmed that depending on the type of dyes and its combination, viscosity and water retention of the coating color may be affected. The opacity of the coated paperboard was somewhat higher in the case of C in which Violet dye and Blue dye were blended at a specific ratio. The addition and combination of the dyes did not affect the ink set property, dry-pick, wet-pick strength and print gloss. The print mottle was decreased when the amount of violet dye was increased or black dye was added.
