Recently history as a discipline has been in a critical situation. Colleges offer less and less history courses; many history departments were shut down or annexed; more and more excellent history majors, both undergraduate and graduate, are dropping out, as their prospects for employment are dim. This is a global phenomenon caused by the market economy of postindustrial society, But the case of Korea is especially serious.
Most professional historians have long been alienated from the populace, as their research had little to do with the latter. Recently a tidal wave of popular history hit Korea, inundating it with TV dramas, movies and web-toones about historical figures and events, The academic historians trained in the analogue age have been waging a losing war against the deluge of unsubstantiated information in the digital era,
Probably ‘public history’ can deliver Korean historians from their predicament. Since the 1960s, American and European historians developed this as a special field of research and education, and established it as a regular program at the graduate level. By so doing, they removed the barriers dividing the academic disciplines, and those between the academics and the populace. China also has been exploring ‘popular history’ as a main program of college education.
Korean historians can take advantage of these examples, They should be more responsive to the demands of the populace, the consumers of historical knowledge. They will have to revamp their history education programs so as to train digital-age historians. In so doing, they can consult American, German and Chinese models. The last one seems to be more applicable, as Korea and China have a high degree of cultural affinity.
