With Korea’s current beautification culture primarily focusing on anti-aging properties, there are a wide variety of functional cosmetic products being developed and offered to help maintain healthy and youthful hands and nails. In this environment, the methods and materials that were used in traditional Korean beautification culture have potential value today as natural and safe ingredients for cosmetic products. According to Goryeodogyeong, red pouches were used to cover and care for nails. Donguibogam references the condition of hands and nails as indicators of internal health, and Gyuhapchongseo mentions them as criteria for evaluating one’s health, character, fortune, and luck. In summary, Korea has a long medical, ceremonial, and cosmetic tradition of beautifying hands and nails, such as using animal and plant products, fragrances, and medicinal herbs to moisturize the hands, using tools to clean nails, using forget-me-nots as dye, and using silkworms to strengthen fingernails.
