The purpose of this study was to identify the factors that influence burnout of nurses who work in small and medium-sized hospitals. The subjects for this study consisted of 208 nurses from nine small and medium-sized hospitals having below 300 beds located in B city. The collected data were analyzed according to frequency, percentage, mean and standard deviation, t-test, one way ANOVA, Scheffé test, Pearson Correlation Coefficient and Multiple regression. The research found that the factors that influence nurses’ burnout were compassion satisfaction(β=-.498 p<.001), compassion fatigue(β=.209, p<.001), hardiness(β=-.125, p=.035), perceived health status(β=.123, p=.011), and turnover consideration within 3 months(β=-.118, p=.022). The explained variance for burnout was 57.7%(F=32.367, p<.001). In conclusion, compassion fatigue was identified to be increase factor that affect the burnout of nurses. It was found that compassion satisfaction and hardiness had a protective effect of burnout of nurses.
