The study investigates the evolution of the war museums, by carrying out literature review of museology and case study of the war museums in Europe. First, it examines two factors, affected the phased developments of the war museums, which are two revolutions of museum and the changes in cognition since the 20th century. The former is in relation to the radical changes of museology, the latter is in terms of the developments of the war museums. Secondly, it introduces Esben Kjeldbaek`s analysis, classifying as three types of the war museums which helps to understand their features. It then categorizes his classification with the factors in order to show clearly the relations between the phased developments. Thirdly, it analyzes three cases of the Imperial War Museums that have the features of the phased developments, then summarizes the research findings; latest exhibition strategies, display techniques, and newly emerging paradigm. Lastly, synthesizing the theoretical consideration and the case study, it argues the newly emerging paradigm of the paradoxical exhibition space, its meaning and following changes, and concludes that the research results of the scenographic, metaphoric exhibition design and high-tech interactive, artistic audio-visual display will contribute to the museographical improvement of the war museums.
