Mudangnaeryeok is a book describing 12 tunes of Hanyang Jaesu-Gud between 1885 and the 1920s and includes pictures and literature. This research examines shamans" costumes, which changed depending on the content of each tune of the ritual, and compares the similarities and differences between shamans" costumes and ordinary costumes. The difference between shamans" costumes and ordinary ones is the way of Ye"mim; specifically, ordinary costumes are designed to wrap around one’s body by layering one front part onto another, while shamans" costumes are Hap"im making it easy to change during the ritual. In addition, Korean shamanism rituals and relevant costumes and tools are right-fitted for the divinity to express the figure of God possessing the Mudang and to give more visual stimulation to onlookers. For instance, sleeves that waved often were widely exaggerated and the remainder of the clothing was minimized for practical use. Chosun was a country based on the idea of the yin-yang and the Five Elements, and the colors of ordinary costumes and shamans" costumes were chosen within this context. Jangsam, meaning “the feast of the heaven,” is white (symbolizing sky), and Cheolic, a military uniform of civil and military functionaries, is blue or red depending on the divinity of the Gud-Gery‘s shamanism ritual. Other than these, lower divinities were represented using neutral tints instead of the Five Elements colors. Because Chosun used costumes to represent each social class according to the principle of yin-yang and the Five Elements, the easiest way to express a specific figure was to use the costume color stipulated in the rule for Mudang. Therefore, anyone can see that shamanism costumes are still similar to, but also simultaneously different from, ordinary costumes, and they are still the kind of clothes that are liberal but systematically framed.
