A study on history of thought in Silla was published based on the results of six papers presented at the annual conference of the Silla Cultural Research Institute of Dongguk University on the theme of “Samgukyusa” and the achievements of Korea epitaph Collection, Silk Road and Korean Buddhist Culture Project. It is not easy to find a recent book dealing with thought history or Buddhist history from a historical perspective. The research results published by the authors, including Study of Ancient Buddhism in Korea and Silla Buddhism and Kingship as New Thinking, served as a guide for later students. This book is also the result of the author"s steady and energetic research. The spatial scope of Silla"s thoughts, which extends from the royal capital to the provinces and into India, confirms the mature status of the Silla society, which has been balanced and accepted by Buddhism and Confucianism.
This book shows how much progress has been made in the study of Silla Buddhist and thought history. The briefness of related data and the difficulty of interpreting “Samgukyusa” and Buddhismrelated literature can be said to find out the possibility of resolution through the discovery of new data and rational interpretation of existing data. After all, this book suggests that the study can be expanded when the study on history of thought in Silla converges with the research attitude of a detailed analysis of existing data such as “Samgukyusa”. In addition, the tasks addressed by this book for future research are the formation of various belief-based beliefs and the concern about how the Silla people show their faith in reality.
