Most critics agree that Harold Pinter is concerned with human understanding and inner reality from his early works. This paper attempts to read the relationship between the past and self-recognition in Old Times. Old Times can be categorized as memory plays dealing with the past and memory from the past. Through the operation of the memory we recall, the past can be represented in the present. However, it is difficult or impossible to verify the past. Individuals can interpret a common experience differently. There can be no hard distinctions between the real and the unreal, nor between the true and the false. In Pinter’s plays, the past the characters represent can be modified, left out, and distorted by the memory. Therefore the memory can be used for power relationship between men and women. With the power of the false which can generate dynamic power and new truth, the past and the memory can’t be fixed. As people perceive themselves through the representation of the past, self-recognition can also be changed continuously.
