This article rereads August Wilson’s plays from a perspective of mad studies, which considers people with cognitive disability to be a minority group. Focusing on four cognitively disabled characters − Gabriel of Fences, Hambone of Two Trains Running, Hedley of Seven Guitars, and Stool Pigeon of King Hedley II − the article identifies a pattern in Wilson’s presentation of the characters. It then argues that the main function of the four cognitively disabled characters can be best explained by “narrative prosthesis,” a term suggested by David T. Mitchell and Sharon L. Snyder, in that all of the characters function as a metaphorical device and a tool of effective narration. The article concludes that the images of Wilson’s cognitively disabled characters are far from what mad studies hopes to find.
