There may be various ways to make a systematic understanding of a country. Of them, the study of a palace, a central area of the country's capital, has a great significance in that it offers a basic data enabling to clearly interpret the characteristics ofthe country. By and large, the palace is understood not only as a space in which a regime is located, but also that which is symbolic of absolute control in the ancient times of East Asia. This is also the case with Goguryeo, but it seems the relevant studies still remain relatively small in number. Furthermore, the Anhak Palace, with its excavation report already published, is exposed to the basic limitation in understanding its meaning, since there is hitherto no unified opinion about its construction period, whether the middle Goguryeo Dynasty or the middle Goguryeo Dynasty. This appears to be caused by the fact that the existing discussions have been focused on specific remains like tiles. Accordingly, we are forced to turn our attention to the interpretation of structural relics, if we are to look into the capital system of Goguryeo revolving around the Anhak Palace in another perspective. Judging from the arrangement structure of its central architecture groups, the Anhak Palace, similar to the front hall of the Mi-ang Palace in the Han Dynasty, shows the traits of the high elevation architecture style, not seen in the capitals of East Asia since Su and Tang Dynasties, like the Taegeukjeon and the Dongseodang in the Jeongjeongwak of its South Palace. The traits were also found in the Gungnaeseong Palace. Therefore, it seems unreasonable to grasp the Anhak Palace on the basis of the palace arrangement in the Su and Tang Dynasties, without any clear foundation. According to the findings of this study, the Gungnaeseong Palace adopted the high elevation architecture style that had originated from the front hall of the Mi-ang Palace in the Han Dynasty, and the Anhak Palace took over the style from the Gungnaeseong Palace and then newly received the system of Taegeukjeon and Dongseodang. In addition, it is probable that the Sanggyeongseong Palace in the Balhae Kingdom employed the styles of the Anhak Palace and the Janganseong Palace in the Tang Dynasty.
