The Expansion and its Practice of Research Method in Literature Education-With a Focus on the Competence of Narrative ExpressionKim, Sang-WookThis study is an attempt to provoke the discussion on research methodology of current Korean literature education field. Most studies which have been published so far largely rely on the way of theoretical arguments. To demonstrate clear preference for theoretical studies, the present study started with presenting the statistical results of published papers on literature education. The results showed that balanced approach between theoretical studies and data-driven studies is needed.The current study is a result of the reflection on the current state of literature education research. This is a descriptive study using the devised instrument to experiment the measurement of narrative competence of 6th graders. The sub-categories of narrative competence are 1) the number of clauses, 2) the number of vocabulary, 3) the number of clauses used in description, 4) the level of syntactic construction, 5) type and the frequency of conjunctive clauses, 6) the number of evaluative phrases. The results displayed that the quantitative measurement of narrative competence closely coincides with the grading of teachers and the difference was insignificant. The present study aimed to show the efficacy of quantitative method in literature education and the possibility of extension of research methodology.
