This paper attempts to derive the meaning of Geumdo through a review of Korean and Chinese literature and set its contemporary concept. The term "Geumdo" is commonly referred to when the philosophical meaning of the geomungo (a Korean zither-like instrument with six strings) is discussed. This paper analyzes the examples of how the word is used in literature sources and academic studies and defines its concept. Geumdo is a practical concept of trying to pursue intangible spiritual values by playing the geomungo and reach an ideal state ultimately. It involves technical skills such as technical instrument-playing techniques for passing down music. In other words, Geumdo is divided into two different processes in the sense of what is pursued. In ancient times, especially in the era of the Unified Silla Kingdom, Geumdo referred to a state of enlightenment reached through a long-term training process of playing the geomungo and was an open concept that includes both Taoistic and aesthetic elements. The pursuit of Geumdo is very truth-seeking and disciplinary in that a state of art is attained through the technically repeated process of playing the geomungo in turn and this process eventually leads to a state of enlightenment. During the Joseon Dynasty period, on the other hand, Geumdo represented the intangible values or spirit that was sought through the geomungo within the ideological frame of Confucianism. In this sense, Geumdo is compatible with the spirit of Qin. In conclusion, Geumdo can be deemed flexible because it varies according to the times and ideological backgrounds in terms of seeking intrinsic values, although it is a philosophical and aesthetic term as a practical approach.
