Short essay about the bahasa Indonesia as an international language Yang Seung-Yoon (Hankuk University of Foreign Studies) Indonesia, with the fourth largest population, was a center of Eastern trade and the home of various spices that had attracted European appetite when the Silk Voyage on the ocean connected the Asiatic Continent with Europe from 13th to 15th century. The Strait of Malacca and the Sea of Jawa were in the heyday of overseas trade with a trade wind. Through its trade network from China and Japan in the east to Madagascar in Southwestern Africa, by way of India and Arabin the west, various kinds of spice were transported to the European market with silk fabrics and pottery. Many traders gathered to Indonesia surrounded by the Strait of Malacca and the Sea of Jawa from 84 different regions. They used bahasa Melayu as a common language, which turned to the national language of Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, and Brunei Darussalam. It means that bahasa Melayu has been used as an international language since 13th century. Indonesia has a high potentiality in that there are various kinds of natural resources as well as labor force of good quality. Since 21st century, international community has been localized for thebenefit of local groups. ASEAN, representative of Southeastern Asia is also following the trend - localization and globalization. Indonesia is the leading power of Southeastern countries and the center of Malayan cultural area. Thus, bahasa Indonesia would be accepted as one of the international languages by international community based on Southeastern Asia with 0.5 billion if social integration, political stability, and economic development were satisfied.
