The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect on the middle school students’ learning achievements and their attitude related with science, after applying for the STS program using NIE on the basis of the ‘Stimuli and Response’ unit in the Science subject for the 2nd grade middle school students. The STS program using NIE consisted of Invitation to solve problems, Exploration, Explanation & Solution, and Taking Action according to the procedure of Iowa Chautauqua Program. The experimental group was composed of 122 students who were sampled for this study, and the teaching method of STS program using NIE was applied to this group. The traditional way of teaching was used for the controlled group. The results of this study showed that there was a statistically meaningful difference in learning achievements between the experimental group and the controlled group(F=5.132, p<.05). Furthermore, there was significantly meaningful difference between the two groups in terms of the attitude related with science(F=27.267, p<.01). The STS program using NIE chose the contents of a lot of interests and curiosity, increased motivation and zest, and resulted in the positive learning achievements and affirmative attitude related with science. Therefore, I assumed that the STS method using NIE would be extended outside the classroom and would develop cultivated citizens who could apply science through the actual practicing of it.
