The inductive inquiry method is widely used as a guide for observation and inquiry based learning in biology classrooms. The aim of the present study was to analyze the relative power spectrum of electroencephalography (EEG) activity during the performance of three types of inductive inquiry tasks: the observation, discovering commonness, and classification tasks. The tasks were presented as block designs for the EEG recording. The EEG data were recorded (30 channels) from 36 right-handed healthy university students volunteered to be participants. The relative power spectral analyses of the EEG activities revealed power increased in the theta (4.0~7.9 Hz) band but decreased in the alpha (8.0~12.9 Hz) band during biological inductive inquiry tasks. The relative powers of the beta (13.0~29.9 Hz) and gamma (30.0~50.0 Hz) bands decreased in the prefrontal and frontal lobes but increased in the parietal, temporal and occipital lobes. The results supported the notion that the process of the inductive inquiry is considerably complicated process and each type of inductive inquiry is involved in specific brain activity. This study also discussed implications of these findings for teaching and evaluating in biology classroom.
