Most existing studies on the economic consequence of immigration view a rise in immigrant population as an increase in labor supply, thereby leading to a lower wage and a greater employment in the labor market equilibrium. Unlike the traditional approach in the literature, this paper examines the impact of immigration on local labor market demand by immigrant skill group. The empirical analysis focuses on the non-traded service sector to better capture the effect of immigrant consumption on labor demand. Using data from the 1990 and 2000 US Census, we find that high-skilled immigration is associated with a significant increase in employment and no significant change in wages, with low-skilled immigration having little to small negative wage effects in the local service sector. The results suggest that consumption by immigrants results in an increase in labor demand that is roughly proportional to the increase in labor supply and that the consumption boost effect of immigration is much stronger with high-skilled immigrant workers.
