Based on a survey of 120 companies in the chemicals industry of Korea, this article examines the causes and effects of the industrial use of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) in Korea, taking into account the two premises related to sustainable development: a) the continuing use of GMOs is one of the most prominent driving forces behind a bio-based economy’s growth, and b) social system members seek protection from the potential risks of GMOs to human health and the environment. Partial Least Squares (PLS) regression was used to test the relationships between political-economic forces, activities to secure economic and social legitimacy, and expected economic performance. The results show compelling evidence of linear structural relationship between most of political and economic forces, industrial use of GMOs and expected economic performance.
