The purpose of this study is to provide a rationale for utilizing collaborative output tasks for learning English phrasal verbs (PVs) in ESL/EFL classrooms. As PVs are inherently difficult for EFL students to learn, new teaching strategies are needed to help them learn PVs more effectively. In order to achieve this goal, I suggested a model of collaborative output tasks for teaching/learning PVs and analyzed learners’ reactions in the model class. In order to assess the efficiency of the proposed model, 48 students answered the class evaluation questionnaire and 12 students were interviewed. The results showed that completing tasks collaboratively led to a meaningful gain in English PV knowledge by promoting student interaction and feedback. In addition, output task-based collaborative learning was found to provide learners with more opportunities for communicating with group members and promoting discussion. Finally, PV avoidance decreased as students studied various types of PVs through this method.
