Depending on Talmy(1991, 2001)’s viewpoint, most of the languages can be classfied into two types: one is Satellite-Framed Language, which the manner is encoded as a main verb and the path is encoded as a satellite; one is Verb-Framed Language, which the path is encoded as a main verb and the manner is encoded as a subordinate adjunct. For English, there are a seriary of manner-of-motion verbs which can express a motion event when they are used together with a preposition phrase. In this case, the manner-of-motion verb is encoded as a main verb and the preposition phrase is encoded as the path, so we concluded that English is a Satellite-Framed Language; For Chinese, the manner-of-motion verbs can not express a motion event while occurring together with a preposition phrase as English. When the Chinese manner-of-motion verb is compounded with motion verb to form a compound motion verb, a path can be encoded by this compound motion verb, so we concluded that Chinese is a Verb-Framed Language.
