The purpose of this study is to clarify significance in sadism and masochism and to explore principle of conflict that those suggest, as for violent scenes of appearing often in Kim Yu-jeong's novel. A desire for sadism and masochism is known to be secret pleasure, which is obtained especially while abusing the other person sexually or self's being abused, but is not subject that will be understood just as a concept of senseless sexual love, which appears in pornography. It is rather a fundamental concept that makes it consider two contrast propensities, namely, either destruction of relationship by violence or orientation of relationship through persuasion, on relationship between the main body and the other person, which was positioned in the origin of a human being's desire, thereby being applicable to analyzing narrative discourse. In fact, the terminology called sadism and masochism came from novel. Motives of violence and prostitution in Kim Yu-jeong's novel show the aspect of sadism, in which each destructs the body and morals. The destructiveness of sadism, which is defined in this writing, is tragic. It is the process that weak self passes own dissatisfaction and abuses it. Sadism has physical positivity, which destructs the body and morals through foul behavior of indulging in violence and prostitution, but is just soft destruction that is placed in destiny, which will result in destroying itself on the other side. Thus, sadist characters in Kim Yu-jeong's novel has the inside of a defier, but fails to obtain up position of a victor. They are significant as existence of proving absurdity in tragic human condition, which cannot help being selected in the world of modern competition, which arrived abruptly. Contrary to this, masochism is a desire that pretends to destroy self, but has a fact that secretly controls the counterpart strategically through contract behavior. Masochist characters in Yu-jeong's novel seem to be harassed and used outwardly due to its stupidity and innocence. However, they are like actors who wore mask and were disguised, thereby artfully hiding true desire and resulting in inducing a situation in the direction that is favorable to oneself. A series of process, which more emphasizes power of a person, who suppresses oneself, and makes oneself funny, allows a seeing person to arouse smile and feel safe rather than a sense of incongruity. Here, humor and irony occur together. They make the quite positive position and new reality rather than destroying self ultimately. It is submission of insidious and smart people who know how to be subtle, thereby being strong submission. It is positive submission with being submitted, above all, in front of structural inconsistency, which cannot be individually confronted at all, thereby being what rather selected the side that self initiates a situation. Thus, it occupies advantage in relationship and makes it possible for resistance, which had been known to be impossible realistically. Masochism is what is methodology in roundabout resistance that an individual can exist effectively in the middle of violently and unilaterally huge oppression. In this way, Yu-jeong's novel makes our posture seen again, which copes with modern conflict. The paradoxical formula as saying that a person, who induces a situation of making it beat, rather than a person who beats actually, is the decisive ground that this study gives positive value to the upsetting creativity of masochism. The landscape in violence and the narration in concealment, which were revealed in Yu-jeong's novel, suggest a prospect as saying that which attitude people, who cannot help proceeding with living with insufficient condition in desperate reality will take. What continues to prescribe a human being's misfortune since the modern times was the material logic. What stands against substance with substance and a way of winning power with power are still distant. A reason that sadism is destroyed in front of the stronger enemy is attributable to this. Even if the physical and classist power is short, we can occupy the linguistic, internal, relationship-centered, cultural, and psychological advantage through masochist expression. Amid a system of centering on competition that drives us into a name-calling quarrel of sadism of being killed and killing more vehemently so far, otherwise, now, which escaped far away from Kim Yu-jeong's era, the communication technique in artful concealment, which he showed on the narrative discourse, has great implication.
