The premise of this topic is that Carducci is one of the great national poets in nineteenth century in Italy. His patriotic spirit is well melted in his splendid works, which tended to lead people to reach to the original and proud national spirit for the ultimate purpose of attainment of their liberty and justice through the real meaning of the independence of Italy.
The nineteenth century is an important era for Italians due to the Risorgimento after the emancipation from the domination of Austria. the Risorgimento was deeply influenced by the French Revolution which transmitted liberal and equal ideas to the peninsula. Consequently Italian people began to realize the national consciousness. The Risorgimento influenced other countries as well as the peninsula in terms of the establishment of the liberalism and also the nationalism which had begun to be developed from the Napoleon era. These tendencies based on the concern to ‘Italy’, which had already begun through the middle ages and the Renaissance, were burst by writers, painters and poets, etc. in order to promote the unification of Italy (Magliocchetti and Verna 1994, 9).
Namely, the liberalism and the nationalism, which could overcome the Wiener System, played a crucial role for the independent Italy, and Carducci was one of the souls of the liberal and national movement in the literary world.
