This paper analyzes the texts of Elena Ferrante, a contemporary Italian writer who has drawn the spotlight from around the world for rendering in literature the fate and life of Naples and women who are regarded as minorities in modern Italy. Taking as its main primary texts the “Neapolitan Novels,” which are made up of My Brilliant Friend, The Story of a New Name, Those Who Leave and Those Who Stay, and The Story of the Lost Child, the thesis takes a long, hard look at the modern history of Italy. Thus, this study revisits the fate and life of Neapolitans who have always been directly or indirectly rejected by the other Italian cities and stripped of equal opportunities to join the mainstream life in Italy as well as of women in Italy who have suffered alienation from the male-centered society. As Naples remains the icon of the social issues with Mezzogiorno, southern Italy, which has persisted since Italian unification, this study examines the image and idea of Naples as rendered in the works of Ferrante. The study, which halves its analysis of the perception of women from Naples between within and without the city, aims to flesh out those women’s perception of feminism, which has been transformed in the process.
