“Munjangbyeo” is a japonica rice cultivar developed from a cross between Sangsanbyeo and Suweon 397 by Sangju Substation of National Yeongnam Agricultural Experiment Station, RDA in 1999. The cultivar is early matured with heading date of Aug. 2 in ordinary season. It has erect plant type and lodging tolerance because of its short culm length, 70 cm tall. Milled rice of this variety has translucent, clear endosperm and medium grain and its palatability of cooked rice is excellent. It is moderately resistant to leaf blast. but susceptible to bacterial blight, virus diseases and major insect pests. The yield performance of Munjangbyeo is about 5.39 MT/ha in milled rice at standard fertilizer level in three year local adaptability test and shows increase of about 3 percent in comparison with Odaebyeo. It would be highly adaptable to the middle and southern mid-mountainous area and southern mountainous area of Korea.
