The purpose of this study to understand in depth motivations of ballet class participants as a hobby. The data was collected through interviewing 6 participants and analyzed qualitatively according to Self-Determinant Theory. Two participants by identification had positive impression on ballet before they started ballet class and it was emphasized to determine to try ballet class by meeting the object of identification on media or ballet performance. They feel success when they perceive themselves approaching image of the identification. The other one of three autonomic motivated was only motivated intrinsically. She pursuit feeling of flow through dancing ballet and it is one of typical intrinsically motivated behavior. However, grinding was turned out to reduce intrinsic motivation. All of three participants by controlled motivations were suggested by others around them to start ballet as sub training method for their professions. They had not have experience on ballet before they started, neither they do not interest in ballet after. And they put value on ballet only as an ideal training method. When they perceive their bodies and skills developed in a way they wanted they felt accomplishment. Previous researches reported that participating on dance positively effect on dance perception. However, in this study of ballet internet cafe members their positive perception about ballet have various aspects. Therefore when we discuss relations among ballet participation, perception, and performance, their motivations and goals of participation should be considered as mediate variables.
