There exists some complex relations between the literary and the classics in Song Dynasty. On the Shijing (詩經, The Book of Songs) side, Song people would like to explain poetry by quoting from the classics, track most poetry styles back to it , and use Six Meanings (六義) to mark the literary methods and review the creations. On the other side, the interpreting ways of Shijing were influenced by the literary, such as recitation and sing. Based on it, they found the original intention regardless of the Han and Tang’s classical interpretation, which opened a path for Ming and Qing. For this, Ming and Qing’s people initiated the literary interpretation way of classics, which made great progress in the field of Shijingology (詩經學) for them. In the field of creation, poems consisted by classic words, poems on classics, and poems imitation, continuation and complement for classics, all of these, showed the other side of the relationship: the wonderful graft of classics and literary. Although this kind of hybrid sometimes looked rather weird, Song people’s enthusiasm for it had not diminished. How to combine the two better, Song people had their own views. Wang Zao (汪藻) and Liu Kezhuang (劉克莊) claimed the poems and classics should be mutually integrated and interacted, but Yan Yu(嚴羽) thought Tang poem’s aesthetic norms should be introduced into Song poetry for Song’s Neo-Confucianism.
