Joseon painters have been seen accepting the Japanese academism, Pleinairisme, but Kim Chan‐yeong, Shim Yeong‐seop, and Kim Ju‐gyeong, who were Western‐style painters and critics of the 1920s, left the argument for postimpressionism. In 1921, Kim Chan‐yeong refers to Matisse as a master of Postimpressionism, second, he divided Impressionism into Pre‐Impressionism that expresses factual descriptions and Postimpressionism that expresses subjectivity, and the latter was seen to be depicted as a confrontation against the former. Third, it is seen that deformation occurs when subjectivity is expressed. This characteristic is also a characteristic of the Japanese Postimpressionism which Shirakaba circle embraced. Postimpressionism, which began to be accepted in the 1920s, when it came to 1930s, was spread widely enough.
At the 1930s, Kim Ju‐gyeong determined that Postimpressionism corresponded to Joseon"s socio‐economic level. In other words, unacceptable art is a superstructure that conforms to the mode of production in which capitalism developed in the 20th century, and so, surrealism and abstract art cannot match up in Joseon"s social situation in which capitalism did not reach this stage.
The representative artist of postimpressionism in the 1920s and 30s was Cézanne, and Kim Ju‐gyeong analyzes the seven characteristics of Cézanne through a 1939 newspaper article. They are textures, clear objects, range of colors, simplification of expressions, color mixing, and simplification, etc. These formal characteristics of Cézanne and the direction of work production make it a human nature based on the nature of life.
