The purpose of this paper is to analyze the semantic shift patterns of [Noun+Verb+Suffix(-i/m/ki)](N+V) type compound nouns in Korean. To identify the patterns of semantic shifts in compound nouns, we used examples of compounds that have only the substantial meaning as well as compounds that have both the dynamic and the substantial meaning. We classified it by grammatical relation, which is mostly either Object-Predicate relation or Adjunct-Predicate relation. This study demonstrates that the semantic shifts in compounds of the Object-Predicate relation may happen as a whole(N+V). In contrast, the semantic shifts in compounds of Adjunct-Predicate relation mostly take place in the following element(V). Furthermore, the present results suggest that the semantic shifts of N+V type compound nouns involve the characteristics of the following verb(V), especially Argument Structure and Lexical Conceptual Structure(Jackendoff 1983, 1990). The results also show that the relationship between the preceding element(N) and the following element(V) plays the principal role in the semantic shifts. These findings help to approach the controversial issue of the analysis of N+V type compound nouns in previous research from a new perspective of the semantic shift.
