In this paper, I introduce the views of second-generation Korean-American college students on their ethnic identity in relation to their views on language. It is important to theorize how the children of immigrants view their identities in the host society, where immigrant parents have often remained in a marginal status due mainly to language and cultural barriers. However, as the children of immigrants proceed through the American educational system, they have often been considered "successful" assimilators into the American mainstream in public and academic discourse. Likewise, second-generation Korean-American college students have become "native" speakers of English. English is their main language, which is generally considered a marker of American national identity. This study shows that second-generation Korean-American students, whose "first language" is English, do not simply regard themselves as assimilated Americans. I illustrate that ethnic identity is something they continuously try to configure. They are aware of their ethnic origins and current position as ethnic minorities, although their personal ways of coming to terms with their identity are diverse. From these Korean-American college students, my study shows that becoming an English speaker does not necessarily mean the loss of ethnic identity, and that leaning Korean (a "heritage" language) does not necessarily lead to homogeneous ethnic identity formation.
