This study investigates Korean American college students’acculturation rates according to the length of residence n the U.S.A. and citizenship status. The subjects (n=42) were divided into three groups: Group=1A (the length of residence is less than 16 years, the first generation); Group=1B (the length of residence is more than 16 years, the first generation); Group=2^(nd) (born in the U.S.A., the second generation).
In the Bonferroni (Dunn) t test for variable in acculturation mean score, group effects were significant among three groups (p is less than 0.05). Gender effects are not significant in ANOVA analysis. F - Value of Type Ⅲ shows no significance. The numbers of the subjects in this research are not so sufficient that the author cannot simply generalize the outcomes. The further investigations are necessary for researching gender effect in future. Group members, who were more acculturated, considered themselves as more Americanized. Most of the subjects identified themselves as Korean American rather than Koreans, Asians or Korean Americans.
The author’s analyses of the results intended to demonstrate the relationships between Korean American College students’ acculturation, gender, length of residence in U.S.A. and their identity development stage. Young adult student’s sense of identity is strongly influenced by environmental factors such as peer culture, language, value, religion, and political or socio-economic situation. Also, religious and spiritual elements appeared to play a vital role in Korean American college students’ identity formation process as they join some regular church fellowships and weekly Bible study groups.
