The purpose of this study is to examine the metaphorical aspect of expressions for morality assessment in modern Chinese based on the conceptual metaphor theory of cognitive linguistics. Through this, this study explored how the moral perception of Chinese speakers is expressed in the language. In addition, the metaphor concept was categorized based on the corpus usage, and a cognitive analysis was performed so as to investigate how Chinese speakers’ experience is conceptualized in terms of cognition. As a result, it was found that moral metaphor in modern Chinese is a cognitive result generated by considering it as concepts associated with space (下, 右, 左, 高, 低, 宽, 窄, 大, and 小), color (白 and 黑), contrast (光 and 暗), posture (正 and 歪), cleanliness (洁 and 脏), temperature (热 and 冷), etc. In addition, all of these metaphorical patterns appeared as semantic conflict patterns. In other words, one appears to be positive and the other negative; the value of morality is given to the positive one, while the value of immorality is assigned to the negative one. This is because there are limitations that the human body and social interactions are based on the nature, and they are all on the basis of our various experiences of comfort, especially physical comfort. That is, a specific experience from physical experience provides motivation to understand abstract and complex moral concepts by schematizing it. In this regard, metaphoric expression for morality assessment is an essential material to show the close relation with our physical experience and cognitive function.
