(Background and Purpose) The foundation of this paper is that despite the fact that different ways to deal with green engineering have been attempted when designing buildings in South Korea, however there are no particular standard structures in the major of architect in schools. In addition, there is a lack of daylighting plan guidelines that have one of the biggest effect on students' health and academic achievement in school classrooms in South Korea. According to this background, this proposal analyzes the design strategy of Montclair Elementary School in the USA, which is designed by daylighting plan criteria in the green building certification system called CHPS(Collaborative for High Performance Schools), and gives different structures to provide optimized daylighting design. Its motivation is to introduce the systems and to utilize them as essential information for mining in local school engineering. (Method) Scope and technique for this investigation: First, Identify the classroom daylighting design standard that established in the school health law and green architecture certification system in South Korea and compare the classroom daylighting design standard which is required for CHPS certification in the USA. Second, in order to meet the daylighting design criteria required by CHPS in the United States, the impacts of anti-glare, indoor illuminance proportion, and regular light use on the daylighting design of school classrooms will be analyzed. Third, based on the analyzed data that mentioned above, it will examine the impact of improving the city condition based on the design strategy of the classroom of the Montclair Elementary School in the USA, which is designed by applying the daylighting design standard among detailed design criteria of CHPS. (Results) According to the classroom design process of the Montclair Elementary School, which is designed with CHPS design criteria, the building will be placed to maximize natural light. To prevent direct sunlight and glare, use a shading device or louver from outside the building and verify it. In order to make indoor illumination uniform, the space will get the natural light equally through classroom windows and opposite windows, and verify using Radiance (computer program). Amplify the utilization of natural light in the classroom and consider saving energies by using a light shelf and artificial lighting control system. (Conclusions) In school building, exposure of adequate daylight is the key factor that significantly affects learning proficiency as well as the physical and psychological well-being of students and teachers. There are lots of various components to consider in school building, for example, the location of the school, the height of the building, the number of classrooms, the ventilation, etc. Yet among them, the systematic and specific guidelines and detailed standards for daylighting design are significant, and a verifiable system is needed for them.
